I have been working on the Chinese female. The shape is almost ready and I have started to create the Chinese male so I will have the first couple ready soon. I will combine this process with a visit to China town in Amsterdam to interview a Chinese family who owns one of the most popular Chinese restaurants . For now I want to share some pictures of the work in progress. I am trying to represent the most important features of the Chinese Qipao like the ‘frog buttons’ which are now listed as part of Shanghai’s intangible cultural heritage. The Peony flower is also an important Chinese symbol recognized as ‘ the king of flowers’ and is a symbol of royalty and virtue. There’s a lot more to learn about Chinese symbols and how they are expressed in Chinese garments. I will be sharing more about this in later posts, so keep on following!
